heroes and lesser known people in history,

integrating visual art with social studies, math,
and English language arts curriculum.
Teachers will be able to share the videos, lessons & supplies with their classrooms and
receive professional development credit
when they submit their evaluations of the project.
Student artwork created in connection with this project will be featured in an ongoing online exhibition
on the Alliance website.

This project is funded by grants from
the Alabama State Council on the Arts,
the National Endowment for the Arts;
and the Central Alabama Community Foundation.

Past Workshops

Our 2020 workshops focused on Alabama Geology, Flora and Fauna
utilizing paper engineering techniques.

Our arts integrated lesson plans are available HERE.

The Alabama Arts Alliance workshops in 2017-2019 centered around the Alabama Bicentennial, which was a three-year celebration of Alabama people, places and stories.
(Alabama celebrated 200 years of statehood on December 14, 2019.)

Our 2016-2017 theme was Places where students around the State created
trading cards depicting places from around Alabama. At the end of 2017, participating students traded their cards with students around the State of Alabama.
The lesson plans are available on our Lesson Plan page.

The 2017-2018 theme was People. The students created portraits of notable Alabama people utilizing various art making techniques. Select student artworks from these lessons were displayed at the Alabama State Capitol in November 2018.
The artworks are now exhibited in a gallery on our website:

Our 2018-2019 theme was Stories.
The Arts Alliance taught the basics of creating Pop-up cards and Pop-up Zines
to enliven and illustrate impactful scenes from known stories from around the State of Alabama
or from original stories newly imagined.

Student art works that resulted from these workshops were exhibited at the Alabama State Capitol in November 2019. The art works are now displayed on our website:

Students and works of art depicted above were created during a partnership program between the Johnson Center for the Arts in Troy, AL, and the Alabama Arts Alliance in 2015. Lessons and teaching developed and presented by Tara Sartorius and Hope Brannon.
